Rachel Whiteread

Rachel Whiteread is an amazing artist that uses negative space to great effect. Best known for her sculptures she won the Turner prize in 1993 (the first woman to win the prize) for the pictured work titled "House". It is a concrete cast of the entire interior of an old Victorian house....one of many that were knocked in the area.....it looks strange yet familiar.... Fireplaces bulge outwards from the walls of House..doorknobs are rounded hollows...it would remind you of a alternate reality much like Alice looking through that glass. It is to me a monument to what was once a home but is now only a ghost of one and how our memory's of anyplace we once called home are as strong as concrete even if the physical home is demolished.
